Jason Martin Biography

Jason Martin is a contemporary British artist, renowned for his textured monochromatic paintings that straddle the boundary between painting and sculpture. Born on September 2, 1970, in Jersey, Channel Islands, Martin has established himself as a significant figure in the art world, known for his unique approach to the medium of paint and his exploration of its physical properties. Martin's journey into the arts began with his education at the Chelsea School of Art in London from 1989 to 1990, followed by his time at Goldsmiths College from 1990 to 1992. It was at Goldsmiths where he honed his craft and developed the distinctive style that would come to define his career. His time at these institutions coincided with the rise of the Young British Artists (YBAs), a group known for their innovative and often controversial approach to art. Although Martin's serious interest in the language and grammar of painting distinguished him from the more well-known painters of the YBA generation, his work shares the same spirit of experimentation and boundary-pushing that characterized the movement. Martin's paintings are characterized by their large surfaces, often made of stainless steel, plexiglass, or aluminum, which serve as the foundation for his textured creations. He applies a single color of oil paint to these surfaces and then uses a large comb-like instrument to pull through the wet paint. This process creates streaks, lines, and swirls that move in different directions, giving his works a dynamic and three-dimensional quality. His pieces such as "Patrol," "Samba," and "Cha Cha" showcase the variety in his approach, from the subtle movement of neon-blue lines to the bold undulations of gold and yellow. Over the years, Martin's style has evolved, but he has remained primarily known for his monochromatic artworks laden with oil or acrylic gel that have been richly textured. His work is often described as a choreography of movements, a series of actions that can never be replicated in quite the same way. This sense of uniqueness and the physicality of his process are central to his work. Martin's dynamic movements, whether slow and sweeping or swift with abrupt halts, are the main subject of his works, and he describes the composition as uninterrupted, with an understanding that choreography is unlocking the painting. Martin's work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in numerous galleries and museums across the world, including The Fine Art Society in London, Palazzo Fortuny in Venice, Italy, Galerie Mario Sequeira in Braga, Portugal, L.A. Louver in Los Angeles, CA, Musée d´Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France, and the PAP Gallery in Tokyo, Japan. He has also been featured in Art Society's ARTfutures 2007, held at Bloomberg SPACE, London. His artwork is held in the collections of prestigious institutions such as the Albright Knox Gallery in Buffalo, the Denver Art Museum, the Sammlung Essl in Vienna, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. Martin's works are also sought after in the art market, with pieces being offered at auction multiple times and fetching significant prices. Martin's influence extends beyond the canvas, as he has also done sculpting work with porcelain plates. His exploration of the materiality of paint and the act of painting itself has led him to experiment with various techniques and materials, including metal-cast sculptures. His work in mixed media, such as the series of small nickel- and copper-cast works, captures the thickness, volume, and texture of globules of paint on a smooth surface, further blurring the lines between painting and sculpture. Today, Jason Martin continues to live and work between London and Portugal, pushing the boundaries of abstract painting and exploring new materials and techniques. His dedication to the craft and his innovative approach have solidified his position as a significant figure in contemporary art.
